Self-Guided Walking Tour

The square in Downtown Chandler was designed as a central location for the community to gather and shop. Part of the City Beautiful movement that swept the country in the early 20th Century, it made Chandler's business district a hub for residents. Conceived as a Spanish Colonial Revival style plaza around a large central park, open-trellised pergolas shade the walkways in the front of the plaza buildings.  Built in 1912, the then named San Marcos Resort  catered to celebrities, elected officials and dignitaries home to Arizona's first grass golf course.

Today you can explore Chandler's heritage as you walk through downtown. Download the self-guided walking tour map to get descriptions of each building and its history or pause out front of the buildings and glimpse the past as displayed on the various tiled mosaics that showcase the building in its original incarnation - from a pharmacy, a bank, movie theater and retail establishment.
